Make art with a purpose, then give it away

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Faith without works is dead. Let’s use the creative act to work out our faith.

Creating art meaningfully is an intimate process.  It’s close to impossible to hide who you are when making.  This is why it is often said that all art is in some way a self-portrait of the artist.  Let’s explore intentionally turning the vulnerability of creating into a gift.  A gift that we give to God first and then to our loved ones, neighbors, and even strangers.

A practical way to share the love and grace of Jesus

Prayer & Share is a challenge for you to spend time praying for someone or something while making art.  Whether it’s a beautifully composed painting that you pour 100 hours into, or a 20 minute hand drawn greeting card, use that time to pray.

Pray for a neighbor while you make a batch of cookies. And then go over, knock on the door, hand them the cookies.

Draw, paint, color, scribble….make a physical object of some kind all while praying. Then give it away.

Let’s become people who use our creativity – no matter how ‘skilled’ it may be – to love one another, to spread the gospel and to worship jesus.

Let’s pray for one another as we create for one another. Let’s encourage one another as we cultivate the creativity that was created in us by the Creator.  Let’s be intentionally image bearers.

There are a few ways you can participate in this challenge.

  • First, just do it. On your own. In your home. Make prayer art for your husband, pastor, best friend, and homeless man on the street corner.

  • Second, request to join our facebook community.  Social media is an often a place of volatile emotions, uneducated opinions and judgement. The Prayer & Share facebook group is a hopeful attempt to redeem a small piece of social media for the Kingdom of God.  The group is a safe place both to make prayer art for one another and to share our experiences as we make prayer art for others.
